Course Description: The bulk of this session will consist of a live, team-based workshop to help you frame the outlines of a plan that will actually deliver on what you're trying to achieve.

What You'll Learn: Most startup marketing plans are little more than a laundry list of things someone thinks it makes sense to do. Each gets a budget, a whole bunch of wishful thinking is sprinkled in, and eventually you end up with a 63-slide PowerPoint deck - 90% of which is never going to happen in the real world.

Join Boston Marketing Guru Mike Troiano to learn a better approach, based on the old maxim that “No plan survives contact with the enemy.” Mike will walk through the approach to marketing plans he's developed over a career spanning top advertising agencies and 6 startups, then present a brief case study based on the work he's doing right now as the CMO of Boston-based Actifio.

They say plans are useless, but planning is essential. Join us for a night of serious marketing planning, and learn what you need to win from someone who has done it before.

Mike Troiano is Chief Marketing Officer of Actifio, a data management company. Prior to joining Actifio, he served as a Principal of Holland-Mark, a Boston-based strategic marketing firm. He spent his early career at top advertising agencies including McCann-Erickson and Foote, Cone & Belding, and became the founding CEO of Ogilvy & Mather Interactive in 1995. Mike co-founded New York-based strategic Internet services firm Brandscape in 1996, and merged it with NASDAQ-listed systems integrator Primix Solutions, where he became president. After the sale of Primix in 2002 he joined venture-funded mobile content pioneer m-Qube, serving as a member of the executive team until the company was bought by VeriSign (Nasdaq: VRSN) in one of the largest Boston-based venture capital exits of 2006. Mike is a frequent contributing writer on branding, startups, and social marketing, and is ranked in the top 1% of the most influential people on Twitter. He is a TechStars Boston mentor, and serves on the advisory boards of several technology startups including BostInno and Kibits, and is a graduate of Cornell University and the Harvard Business School.
